'Tis the Season...

For tomatoes!!!

I found some interesting information about tomatoes whilst doing one of my daily google searches. Did you know about the 45 zones? Well, apparently there are 45 zones for growing tomatoes, here is a list detailing them.
Here in southern Ohio, we are zone 35. Our growing season is late April to late October. That's a good six months of awesomeness if you ask me! I love tomatoes. The hubby hates them, except in any kind of bruschetta/salsa situation.
I picked up some lovely heirloom tomatoes this week, and actually if I'm being totally honest I bought them on two different trips to the store!
I know I've mentioned this before, but when we were on our honeymoon, I pretty much only ate some variety of a caprese salad the entire time. I'd have to say that the best caprese I ever had was the first one I ever had! I've never found one that comes close!
I worked at a cute little bistro type restaurant, which has since closed down unfortunately, but they  just had something different on theirs.. some secret ingredient.. Still, hands down, best caprese ever, and let's just say, that if I was eating out, and there was a caprese on the menu, I got it. Always! I never don't get one if you get what I'm saying!

Can't wait until these baby basils turn into green, leafy yumminess!

Ok, can we also talk about tomato sandwiches for just a min? Typically, this southern sandwich is made with two pieces of plain ole white bread, a generous slather of mayo, a piece of kraft american cheese, and the juiciest slices of red tomato you can find! Oh! Salt and pepper, can't forget that!
Absolute heaven on earth!
These days I have my own twist on this yummy treat! I use my favorite bread, which is an oat nut bread, swiss cheese, and olive oil mayo. I obviously still use the juiciest tomato I can find but it doesn't necessarily have to be red! I don't discriminate!

Happy Memorial Day!

Gone but never forgotten.
